Our Ongoing Commitment to Preventing Youth Violence

                           The "Senseless" Quilt Project

                                                            A Statement Against Youth Violence

We had grown weary of the teddy bears and stuffed animals tied to trees and posts;  the piles of flowers and T-shirts with pictures and names of dead children; the newspaper headlines and sub-titles declaring another senseless shooting.   Our children are dying, parents are crying, communities are hurting and we are losing our future. Please help us in our efforts to stop this heartbreaking and senseless violence. Together, we can make a difference. In 2008 REACH Project began a campaign to engage Detroit Youth in a violence prevention program. Under the direction of our resident artist, mixed-media artist  Ziwadi Majiisa; youth created a powerful statement against youth violence in the form of a handmade quilt.  Following is an excerpt from a Nov. 19, 2008 Detroit News article written by Delores Flynn about our Senseless Quilt:

Youths create plea for calm With 'Senseless Project' Quilt, teens preach against violence By Delores FlynnThe Detroit News DETROIT — DeVonte King prays for a day when youths will relax their fists and put down guns when trying to resolve their conflicts. "In order for us to become better people, we have to start using our words in a positive manner and not just our fist," said the 16-year-old junior at Detroit School of Arts.

If you are interested in viewing the Quilt please visit our office.  We will also bring the Quilt to your school or oganization, along with our non-violence message.

     WHAT WE DO

Incorporated in 1992 as a not-for-profit community based organization, REACH Project’s primary focus is to assist economically disadvantaged youth to recognize their full academic potential.  With a leadership that is 95% educators, it has been our mission to create enriching environments that cultivate a love for the learning process.  Our accomplishments include an on-site academic program in the Jeffries Housing Projects as part of the 1994 HOPE VI Initiative,   A collaboration with DPS to develop gender specific programs (female responsibility) in response to the  Title IV Safe and Drug Free Schools and Communities Act of 1994,  and a 2002 partnership with the Wayne County Department of Public Health to offer prevention education to Metro-Detroit students. In 2003 we provided activities to the youth at Smith Homes, and following the new Mayor's directive, beginning in 2002 through 2005, we operated the Mayor’s Time Clubhouse at Butzel Family Center.  In 2005 and 2006 we conducted Summer Freedom Schools in partnership with Children’s Defense Fund, and continue to offer programs that not only prepare youth academically, but instill a "strong sense of self"  and high self-esteem that will fortify them as they move through life.
